The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
