Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
